Apple has planted much of its manufacturing operations in India in the last few years, aided by hefty government incentives. This action item became even more prominent due to the COVID-19 outbreak, as the pandemic revealed a clear need to diversify its supply chain. According to reports, Apple’s third-largest supplier, Pegatron, has yet to begin operations in India, but their entry will result in the creation of another 6-7,000 more jobs.

However, there have been some drawbacks to the change. The company’s HR infrastructure was overburdened by the surge of new employees at Wistron’s Karnataka facility during a massive hiring effort. A backlog of unpaid salaries eventually led to a riot at the factory in December, and Apple placed the supplier on probation. The plant was only reopened in March.
