National Institute of Immunology (NII) is an autonomous research institute located in New Delhi. Under the Department of Biotechnology (DBT) for research in immunology.

NII, established having Prof. M. G. K. Menon as Chairman of its governing body. It has its origins in the ICMR–WHO Research & Training Centre in Immunology at the AIIMS, Delhi. NII in 1982. However, NII continued to function from AIIMS laboratory of its honorary Director Prof G.P. Talwar, till its new building was constructed in 1983, carved out of the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) campus. G.P. Talwar is the founder director of this institute. Moreover, NII developed a first of its kind vaccine for leprosyin India. And it was named as mycobacterium indicus prani.

Research Areas: 

Immunology, Infectious and Chronic Disease Biology, Molecular and Cellular Biology, and Chemical, Structural and Computational Biology.

Minimum qualifications for PhD admission 2023:

M.Sc. in any branch of Science (e.g. Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics) M.Tech. M.B.B.S., M.V.Sc., M.Pharm. or equivalent qualification as per the norms of the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi.

At least 60% aggregate score or equivalent grade in Senior Secondary Certificate (10+2) and Bachelor’s degree. Then 55% aggregate score or equivalent grade in Master’s degree are essential for the general category. However, Five percent relaxation in aggregate scores in Senior Secondary, Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees will be applicable for the candidates from reserved categories [(OBC (non-creamy layer; NCL), SC/ST, and PwD]. percentage score to the next integral value is not permitted to rounding off.

Candidates appearing for the qualifying examination in the current academic year are eligible to apply. Satisfactory fulfilment of the eligibility requirements at the time of joining will permit admission.

Reservations of seats: 15% for SC, 7.5% for ST, 27% for OBC (NCL). 3% for person with disability (PwD) as per statutory norms.

Selection procedure:

NII will select candidates for the Ph.D. programme through the following two Channels:

Fellowships:  NII currently provides Junior Research Fellowship of Rs.31000/- per month to the selected candidates. Awardees of fellowships from CSIR, UGC, ICMR, DBT or and DST, may avail them as per rules.
